Wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, solar

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas), nuclear (uranium)

| Generation Method | Full Energy Transfer Chain |
| --- | --- |
| Wind | Kinetic store (moving air) → Kinetic store (turbine blades) → electrical energy |
| Hydroelectric | Gravitational potential store (water at height) → Kinetic store (falling water/turbine) → electrical energy |
| Geothermal | Thermal store (hot underground rock) → Kinetic store (steam/turbine) → electrical energy |
| Solar heating system | light energy (sunlight) → Thermal store (water/air) |
| Solar cell (photovoltaic) | light energy (sunlight) → electrical energy |
| Fossil fuel power station | Chemical store (fuel) → Thermal store (steam) → Kinetic store (turbine) → electrical energy |
| Nuclear power station | Nuclear store (uranium) → Thermal store (steam) → Kinetic store (turbine) → electrical energy |

> **warning**
>

- **Describe the energy transfers** — List every energy store in order from the original resource to the final output, using standard Edexcel energy store terminology. *(For wind power, you must name all 3 stores, not just 'wind → electricity'.)*

- Nuclear power key pros: No CO2 emissions during operation, very high energy output per kg of fuel, reliable 24/7 output
- Nuclear power key cons: High construction and decommissioning costs, produces long-lived radioactive waste that requires secure storage
- Fossil fuel key pros: Low construction cost, reliable output regardless of weather, can be scaled up to meet high demand
- Fossil fuel key cons: Releases CO2 that contributes to climate change, releases sulfur dioxide that causes acid rain, finite resource that will run out

2. Which of the following is a key disadvantage of nuclear power?

   - A) Releases CO2 during operation
   - B) Low energy output per kg of fuel
   - C) Produces long-lived radioactive waste
   - D) Is a renewable resource

Nuclear power produces radioactive waste that must be stored safely for thousands of years, a key downside of the technology.

Confusing solar cells and solar heating systems, writing that solar cells produce thermal energy
Students mix up the two solar technologies, leading to lost marks on transfer chain and classification questions
Memorize: solar cells = light → electrical directly; solar heating = light → thermal
Omitting intermediate energy stores in transfer chains, e.g. writing 'wind → electricity' instead of the full chain
Exam marks require all key stores to be named, not just the start and end points
List every energy store in order, including the kinetic store of the turbine for all rotating generation methods
Classifying nuclear power as a renewable resource
Students assume no CO2 emissions = renewable, but uranium is a finite resource
Only wind, water, geothermal and solar are renewable; fossil fuels and nuclear are non-renewable
Claiming nuclear power releases CO2 during operation
Students confuse nuclear with fossil fuel generation
Nuclear power produces no CO2 or polluting gases during operation; emissions only occur during construction, mining and decommissioning
Giving unbalanced answers for evaluation questions, e.g. only listing advantages of renewable energy
Evaluation questions explicitly require balanced arguments to get full marks
Always give an equal number of advantages and disadvantages matching the question's mark allocation
