2 min

If 5 workers make 100 shirts per day, labour productivity is 20 shirts per worker per day

  2. 2
    Labourproductivity=480 loaves/8 workers=60 loaves per worker per dayLabour productivity = 480 \text{ loaves} / 8 \text{ workers} = 60 \text{ loaves per worker per day}
  3. 3

3 min

  • Land productivity: Improved via fertiliser use, drainage, irrigation, or land reclamation (e.g. turning coastal wetland into farmland to increase crop yield per hectare)

  • Labour productivity: Raised by improving human capital through education, on-the-job training, or access to skilled migrant workers who bring specialist expertise

  • Capital productivity: Increased by investing in larger quantities of capital equipment, or upgrading to newer, more technologically advanced machinery that produces more output per hour of use

2 min

In a car factory, one worker may only fit door handles, while another only installs windscreens, rather than each worker building an entire car

4 min

Stakeholder

Advantages

Disadvantages

Businesses

Higher labour productivity, lower average costs, less training required for individual roles, faster production speed

Higher worker turnover from repetitive work, higher risk of production disruption if one specialised worker is absent, increased cost of monitoring individual task performance

Workers

Easier to master a single skill, higher potential wages for specialist skilled roles, less time switching between tasks

High risk of boredom and low job satisfaction from repetitive work, reduced transferable skills if the role is made redundant, less flexibility to cover other roles in the business

Defining productivity as 'total output of a business'

原因:

This confuses productivity (output per input) with total production, a common mark-losing mistake

Always define productivity as output per unit of input, e.g. output per worker, output per hectare, and use a numerical example if possible

Listing economies of scale as an advantage of division of labour

原因:

Economies of scale are a separate topic (S2_T03) related to firm size, not division of labour specifically

Only list advantages directly linked to worker specialisation, e.g. faster task completion, less training time

Only discussing advantages of division of labour for evaluate questions

原因:

Evaluate questions require balanced analysis of both pros and cons to earn full marks

Include 2-3 advantages, 2-3 disadvantages, and a supported conclusion weighing which side is stronger in the given context

Claiming migration always reduces labour productivity

原因:

Skilled migration brings workers with specialist training and expertise, which raises average labour productivity for a firm or economy

Distinguish between skilled and unskilled migration: skilled migration raises productivity, while unskilled migration may lower it if workers lack relevant training

Confusing division of labour with national specialisation in trade

原因:

National specialisation is part of the international trade syllabus (S4), not this sub-topic

Keep discussion of division of labour limited to specialisation of individual workers within a single firm's production process

6. 速查表

Concept

Key Exam Facts

Productivity definition

Output per unit of input, e.g. output per worker per hour

Land productivity drivers

Division of labour definition

Specialisation of workers on specific individual tasks

Division of labour pros (firms)

Higher productivity, lower average costs, less training time

Division of labour cons (firms)

Division of labour pros (workers)

Higher skill mastery, higher wages for specialist roles

Division of labour cons (workers)

Boredom, low job satisfaction, fewer transferable skills

Now that you have mastered productivity and division of labour, you are ready to move on to the next core business economics topic: economies and diseconomies of scale, which builds on the link between productivity and average production costs for growing firms. You will also use your understanding of productivity when analysing business costs, revenue and profit in later S2 sub-topics, as well as when evaluating supply-side policies in the macroeconomics unit (S3). For exam practice, work through past paper data response questions on productivity and division of labour to practice constructing balanced analysis and evaluation chains that align to Edexcel's mark scheme requirements. Make sure you can apply these concepts to real-world contexts, such as manufacturing firms, farms and service sector businesses, as these are common contexts for exam questions.
