Generalizing findings

1. Core concept

Generalizing means asking whether a study's findings apply beyond the specific people, place and time in which they were collected. It depends on how representative the sample is, how similar the target population and setting are, and whether the task reflected real life (ecological validity). A finding from a narrow sample โ€” one culture, one age group, a single decade โ€” may not transfer, so conclusions should state the limits of generalization rather than assume universality.

Van Ijzendoorn & Kroonenberg (1988)

A meta-analysis of Strange Situation studies found intracultural variation in attachment nearly 1.5 times larger than cross-cultural variation. โ€” A caution against over-generalizing: when variation WITHIN cultures can exceed variation between them, a finding from one sample may not represent even the 'same' culture, let alone humanity.

Strength โ€” forces honest scope โ€” Explicitly checking representativeness stops a local finding being sold as a universal law of behaviour.

Limitation โ€” hard to settle without replication โ€” Whether a finding generalizes usually cannot be known from one study; it needs replication across samples and settings that many studies never receive.

Wrong move:

A result from one sample automatically applies to everyone โ€” and 'sampling bias' and 'generalization' are the same thing.

Why:

A frequently penalised misconception in IB Psychology exams.

Correct move:

Generalization must be argued from representativeness, not assumed; a study on, say, US students in the 1950s may not generalize across cultures or eras. Sampling bias (an unrepresentative sample) is a cause of poor generalization, not a synonym for it.
