Strategies for ensuring the credibility of research.

## Learning objectives

- Strategies for ensuring the credibility of research.

## How often is this tested?

Based on OwlsPrep's analysis of official CIE IB_PSYCH P3 past papers (2019–2025): **Ensuring credibility** appears **1 times** in the last 7 years — **4%** of all P3 questions (1 of 25).

Most-tested forms: SAQ (9 marks) (1).

*Small sample — indicative only.*

## Core concept

Credibility is the trustworthiness of research — how far its conclusions genuinely reflect reality rather than artefacts of method or bias. Researchers strengthen it with concrete strategies: triangulation (combining methods, data sources or investigators), reflexivity, member checking (asking participants whether an interpretation rings true), prolonged engagement, and clear, replicable procedures. The more independent lines of evidence converge, the more credible the conclusion.

## Key studies

IB Psychology answers must be supported by named studies. Learn these to cite as evidence:

**Cialdini (1984)** — Cialdini spent three years undercover observing real-world persuasion to formulate six key principles of compliance. — *Method triangulation — immersive field observation combined with the later controlled tests of these principles — makes the resulting conclusions more credible than either method alone.*

## Evaluation (AO3)

**Strength — convergence beats a single source** — Triangulation and member checking catch method-specific errors, so agreement across independent sources is stronger evidence than any one study.

**Limitation — costly and not foolproof** — These strategies demand time and resources many studies lack, and convergence can still reflect a shared bias rather than the truth.

## Scope

>
> The strategies for credibility; the reader-side judgement of transfer is RM_9 and reflexivity in depth is RM_8.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** One well-chosen quotation, or a single method, makes a qualitative study credible.
  - Why it fails: A frequently penalised misconception in IB Psychology exams.
  - Correct: Credibility comes from deliberate strategies — triangulation, member checking, reflexivity, transparent procedure — not from a persuasive quote. Convergence across independent sources is the point.
