Value of dual-processing theory

1. Core concept
Dual-processing theory holds that thinking runs on two modes: a fast, automatic, intuitive System 1 and a slow, deliberate, analytic System 2. Its value for understanding thinking and decision-making is that it does two jobs at once β it organises many separate biases under one framework (they are what System 1 produces when System 2 does not intervene) and it predicts WHEN errors appear, namely under time pressure or low effort. That is why capable, intelligent people still make systematic reasoning mistakes.

Tversky and Kahneman (1981)
People reversed their risk preferences depending only on whether identical outcomes were framed as gains or losses. β The framing effect is the classic demonstration of System-1 intuition overriding consistent, rational choice β showing the model's value in predicting a specific, replicable error.

Limitation β a metaphor, not two brain systems β 'Two systems' is a useful simplification; the sharp dichotomy is debated and may overstate how separate the processes really are, so its value is explanatory rather than a literal architecture.
