The role of social learning theory in learning. Application of social learning theory to explain and change behaviour.

## Learning objectives

- The role of social learning theory in learning. Application of social learning theory to explain and change behaviour.

## Core concept

Social learning theory says people learn behaviour by observing models rather than only through direct reinforcement. Learning is mediated by four cognitive processes: attention to the model, retention of what was seen, reproduction of the behaviour, and motivation to perform it — and imitation is more likely when the observer identifies with the model or expects it to be rewarded (vicarious reinforcement). Because behaviour can be acquired just by watching, the theory is applied both to explain how behaviours (e.g. aggression) spread and to change behaviour deliberately using positive models.

## Key studies

IB Psychology answers must be supported by named studies. Learn these to cite as evidence:

**Bandura, Ross, and Ross (1961)** — Children who watched an adult behave aggressively towards a Bobo doll imitated both the modelled and novel aggressive acts, especially when they identified with the model. — *The textbook demonstration of observational learning — behaviour acquired by watching a model, without direct reinforcement of the child.*

## Evaluation (AO3)

**Strength — explains learning conditioning cannot** — It accounts for rapid learning of new, complex behaviours from a single observation and for behaviour that appears with no prior reinforcement, and it grounds real interventions using positive role models.

**Limitation — from imitation to identity is under-specified** — The Bobo studies are lab-based with short-term imitation, and the mediating step from watching to internalising a behaviour (why some models are copied and others not) is described more than mechanistically explained.

## Scope

> **note**
>
> SLT as a route to learning and behaviour change is the focus. The approach-level treatment is SOC_10; its health application is HWB_6 and its relationships application HR_6; direct-consequence learning is LC_2.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Reducing social learning theory to 'children copy what they see' and describing only the Bobo doll study.
  - Why it fails: A frequently penalised misconception in IB Psychology exams.
  - Correct: Explain the theory itself — the mediational processes (attention, retention, reproduction, motivation) plus identification and self-efficacy — and use the research to illustrate them; observation plus cognitive mediation, not simple imitation.
