The role of social learning theory in understanding one or more health problems.

## Learning objectives

- The role of social learning theory in understanding one or more health problems.

## Core concept

Social learning theory explains health behaviour as learned from watching others. People acquire habits — around eating, exercise, substance and screen use — by observing models (family, peers, role models, media), remembering and reproducing what they see, and being guided by vicarious reinforcement (seeing the model rewarded) and their own sense of self-efficacy. This is why health-relevant behaviours cluster in families and peer groups, and why interventions often use relatable models rather than just information. It treats health as social and observational, not only a matter of individual choice or biology.

## Key studies

IB Psychology answers must be supported by named studies. Learn these to cite as evidence:

**Black et al. (2010)** — The 'Challenge!' mentorship programme for urban Black adolescents, grounded in social cognitive theory, produced a moderate reduction in obesity and less snack/dessert consumption. — *A social-learning-based intervention (mentors as models) changing a health behaviour — SLT applied to a health problem.*

## Evaluation (AO3)

**Strength — concrete mechanisms and applications** — SLT specifies modifiable mechanisms (modelling, vicarious reinforcement, self-efficacy) and directly informs interventions (Black), explaining why health behaviours spread through modelling.

**Limitation — correlational and partial** — Much evidence is correlational or short-term, so an association between modelling and a health behaviour need not be learning, and SLT downplays the biological drivers of some health problems.

## Scope

> **note**
>
> This card is SLT applied to explain a health problem. SLT as a general mechanism is SOC_10; SLT in learning is LC_5; SLT-based interventions and their effectiveness are HWB_9.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Reducing social learning to vague 'peer pressure' or 'the media influences us', without the SLT mechanism.
  - Why it fails: A frequently penalised misconception in IB Psychology exams.
  - Correct: Name the process — attention to a model, retention, reproduction, and motivation via vicarious reinforcement and self-efficacy — not just that peers or media 'have an effect'.
