The application of social learning theory to explain and change group behaviour(s).

## Learning objectives

- The application of social learning theory to explain and change group behaviour(s).

## How often is this tested?

Based on OwlsPrep's analysis of official CIE IB_PSYCH P2 past papers (2019–2025): **Social learning theory** appears **16 times** in the last 7 years — **5.6%** of all P2 questions (16 of 288).

Most-tested forms: Essay: Discuss (22 marks) (7), Essay: To what extent (22 marks) (6), Essay: Evaluate (22 marks) (3).

## Core concept

Social learning theory says we learn behaviour by observing models and the consequences they receive, not only through direct reinforcement. Learning requires attention, retention, reproduction and motivation, and is more likely when a model is rewarded (vicarious reinforcement) or is similar, liked or high-status. It is used to explain how group behaviours — from prosocial helping to aggression — spread, and to design interventions that deliberately model desirable behaviour.

## Key studies

IB Psychology answers must be supported by named studies. Learn these to cite as evidence:

**Bryan (1975)** — Children who watched a model donate gift certificates to charity became more generous themselves, at least in the short term. — *Anchors PROSOCIAL modelling — observing a helping model changes helping behaviour, the basis of prosocial interventions.*

**Stein and Friedrich (1972)** — Aggressive cartoons raised aggression only in children who were already aggressive, and prosocial programmes raised prosocial behaviour only in children from low-SES backgrounds. — *Anchors media AGGRESSION/prosocial learning and shows mediating variables — the effect depends on the child, not the model alone.*

## Evaluation (AO3)

**Strength — integrates cognition and environment; applied** — It captures observational learning that pure conditioning misses (attention, expectation) and grounds real interventions such as prosocial media and modelling campaigns.

**Limitation — causality contested** — Effects are moderated by the person (Stein & Friedrich) and do not always appear — Kuhn et al. (2019), an eight-week randomised controlled trial, found violent video games had NO effect on aggression, challenging simple 'observation causes behaviour' claims.

## Scope

> **note**
>
> SLT applied to explain and change group behaviour (prosocial helping, aggression) is the focus; the base application is SOC_10, and reinforcement-based learning is COG_7. The wider media-violence debate is handled here as evaluation, not a separate card.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Writing a long description of a modelling study instead of explaining how social learning applies to the behaviour in the question.
  - Why it fails: A frequently penalised misconception in IB Psychology exams.
  - Correct: Name the process (attention → retention → reproduction → motivation, plus vicarious reinforcement) and link it explicitly to the target behaviour; the study is evidence for the argument, not the argument itself.
