## Core concept

Biological explanations link interpersonal relationships to chemical messengers. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain's reward system, is associated with the intense focus and pleasure of early romantic love; oxytocin and vasopressin are linked to longer-term attachment and pair-bonding, acting as neuropeptides within the brain's bonding circuits rather than only as slow blood-borne hormones. Because rewarding and bonding feelings track these chemicals, biology clearly contributes to attraction and attachment — but on its own it gives only a limited account of how relationships actually form and last.

**Fisher, Aron, and Brown (2005)** — An fMRI study found activation in dopamine-rich reward areas (the VTA and caudate nucleus) when participants viewed photos of a beloved. — *Anchors the DOPAMINE (neurotransmitter) link to the reward and focus of early romantic love.*

**Aron et al. (2005)** — Longer duration of being in love was associated with more activation in the ventral pallidum, a region rich in vasopressin receptors in monogamous species. — *Anchors the vasopressin link to longer-term attachment as NEURAL evidence (activity in a vasopressin-receptor-rich region); the messengers involved shift as a relationship matures.*

## Evaluation (AO3)

**Strength — objective biological correlates** — Brain imaging gives measurable, replicable evidence that specific chemical systems accompany love and attachment, going beyond self-report.

**Limitation — correlational & reductionist** — fMRI shows co-activation, not that a chemical CAUSES the feeling; and reducing relationships to hormones and genetics gives only a limited account, leaving out the cognitive and cultural sides of how relationships form and last.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Answering a 'chemical messengers in relationships' question by calling a hormone (oxytocin, vasopressin) a neurotransmitter, or vice versa.
  - Why it fails: A frequently penalised misconception in IB Psychology exams.
  - Correct: Neurotransmitters (e.g. dopamine) act fast across synapses; classic hormones travel slowly in the blood. Oxytocin and vasopressin are neuropeptides that act in BOTH modes (in the brain and the body), so name the messenger by how it acts in the behaviour you are explaining rather than forcing a neat fast/slow split.
