## What is Productivity?

**Productivity** — Output per unit of input used in production, a measure of operational efficiency

*Example:* If 5 workers make 100 shirts per day, labour productivity is 20 shirts per worker per day

Productivity is distinct from total output: total output counts all units produced, while productivity measures how efficiently inputs are used to create those units. Higher productivity means a firm can produce more output with the same number of inputs, or the same output with fewer inputs, lowering average costs.

**Worked example:** A bakery employs 8 bakers who produce 480 loaves of bread per day. Calculate the bakery's labour productivity, and state what this measure shows.

1. Use the formula for labour productivity: output per worker = total output ÷ number of workers
2. $$Labour productivity = 480 \text{ loaves} / 8 \text{ workers} = 60 \text{ loaves per worker per day}$$
3. This measure shows that on average, each baker produces 60 loaves each working day.

## Factors Affecting Productivity

Productivity varies across sectors and firms based on changes to the three key factors of production, as outlined in the Edexcel specification:

1. Irrigation delivers consistent water supplies to crops, reducing crop failure during dry periods.
2. This increases the total quantity of vegetables produced per hectare of farm land.
3. As a result, land productivity (output per hectare) will rise significantly.

## What is Division of Labour?

**Division of labour** — The specialisation of individual workers on a single specific task or small set of tasks within a production process, instead of completing all tasks required to make a finished good

*Example:* In a car factory, one worker may only fit door handles, while another only installs windscreens, rather than each worker building an entire car

Division of labour was first formalised by economist Adam Smith in his 1776 work *The Wealth of Nations*, where he used the example of a pin factory to show how specialisation could increase output by over 4000% per worker.

**Worked example:** A coffee shop uses division of labour for its order process: one worker takes orders, one makes hot drinks, one prepares cold food, one runs the till. State one way this arrangement could increase the coffee shop's labour productivity.

1. Each worker repeats their specific task frequently, so they become faster and more skilled at it over time, reducing mistakes.
2. This means more customer orders can be completed per hour by the same number of workers, raising labour productivity.

## Advantages and Disadvantages of Division of Labour

Division of labour has distinct impacts on both businesses and workers, which must be weighed when deciding how to structure production processes. The key trade-offs are outlined below:

2. One key disadvantage is that the repetitive work may lead to boredom and low morale, which could increase stress and reduce job satisfaction.
3. Overall, the benefit depends on the type of work: if the role requires a valuable specialist skill, workers benefit, but if the task is unskilled and repetitive, the disadvantages outweigh the gains.
