This unit introduces core principles of classical mechanics for particles, covering motion, forces, energy and momentum. It forms a key applied mathematics section of the CIE 9709 syllabus.

**Prerequisites:** [CIE 9709 Unit 1: Pure Mathematics 1](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-9709-u1-overview/)

## Learning objectives

- Model physical motion of particles in 1 and 2 dimensions using core classical mechanical principles
- Solve problems involving forces, equilibrium, and motion under constant acceleration
- Apply energy and momentum conservation principles to solve system dynamics and collision problems
- Translate real-world mechanical scenarios into solvable mathematical models

## Unit at a Glance

This unit follows a logical learning sequence: we start by learning how to describe motion (kinematics), then move into what causes motion (forces and Newton's laws), and finish with energy and momentum concepts that simplify solving complex problems. All sub-topics build on prior knowledge, so we recommend working through them in order.

The unit is split into 5 core sub-topics:
- [Kinematics](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-9709-u3-kinematics/) — Covers description of motion in 1 and 2 dimensions, including constant acceleration and projectile motion.
- [Forces and equilibrium](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-9709-u3-forces-and-equilibrium/) — Covers vector addition of forces, equilibrium conditions, and friction on stationary and moving objects.
- [Newton's laws of motion](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-9709-u3-newton-s-laws-of-motion/) — Applies Newton's three laws to connected particles and motion on inclined planes.
- [Energy, work and power](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-9709-u3-energy-work-and-power/) — Introduces gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, work done and power calculations for mechanical systems.
- [Momentum](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-9709-u3-momentum/) — Covers conservation of momentum for one-dimensional collisions and impulse calculations.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Mixing up the sign of acceleration due to gravity, especially in projectile motion problems
  - Why it fails: Consistent sign errors lead to incorrect displacement and velocity calculations
  - Correct: Define your positive direction at the start of the problem, and keep $g$ negative if upward is the positive direction
- **Wrong:** Forgetting to account for work done against friction when applying energy conservation
  - Why it fails: This leads to overestimation of a system's final kinetic energy or velocity
  - Correct: Always add work done against non-conservative forces like friction to your energy balance equation

## Cheatsheet

| Concept | Key Formula / Rule |
| --- | --- |
| Constant (uniform) acceleration | $v = u + at$, $s = ut + \frac{1}{2}at^2$, $v^2 = u^2 + 2as$ |
| Projectile horizontal motion | Horizontal acceleration = 0, horizontal velocity remains constant |
| Force equilibrium | Resultant force in all directions = 0: $\sum F_x = 0$, $\sum F_y = 0$ |
| Newton's Second Law of Motion | $F_{\text{net}} = ma$ |
| Work done by constant force | $W = Fd \cos\theta$ |
| Conservation of mechanical energy | $KE_1 + PE_1 + W_{\text{external}} = KE_2 + PE_2$ |
| Power | $P = Fv = \frac{W}{t}$ |
| Conservation of momentum | $m_1 u_1 + m_2 u_2 = m_1 v_1 + m_2 v_2$ |
| Impulse | $I = \Delta p = Ft$ |

## What's next

Start this unit with the first sub-topic on kinematics, which lays the foundation for describing motion that all subsequent mechanical concepts rely on. Work through the sub-topics in order as listed, since each builds on knowledge from the last. Once you complete this full unit, move on to the next core unit in the CIE 9709 syllabus.
