This unit introduces the core structure of atoms, the nature of radioactivity, and the particle model of light, forming the foundation for further nuclear and quantum physics study at A2 level.

**Prerequisites:** Foundational knowledge of energy, motion and waves from earlier AS CIE 9702 units

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Confusing proton number (Z) with nucleon number (A) when calculating neutron count.
  - Why it fails: Z (lower subscript) is the number of protons, while A (upper superscript) is the total number of protons + neutrons.
  - Correct: Always calculate number of neutrons as $N = A - Z$, double-checking which number corresponds to which.
- **Wrong:** Incorrectly balancing proton and nucleon numbers for beta decay.
  - Why it fails: Beta minus decay changes proton number but leaves total nucleon number unchanged, unlike alpha decay which reduces both.
  - Correct: Balance proton numbers and nucleon numbers separately on both sides of the decay equation to confirm they are equal.
