This unit follows the natural sequence of immune response: we start with the first lines of defence that prevent pathogens ever entering the body, then move to non-specific internal innate immunity, before covering the targeted, specific adaptive immune system carried out by B and T lymphocytes.

After building your understanding of core immune function, we explore how the immune system remembers pathogens for future protection, what happens when the immune system misfires, and how modern medicine harnesses immune molecules for diagnosis and treatment.

Confusing humoral and cell-mediated immunity, mixing up the roles of B and T lymphocytes

Students often struggle to keep the two branches of adaptive immunity straight
