This unit explores how the human body defends against invading pathogens, from initial non-specific barrier defences to targeted adaptive immune responses, and covers key medical applications like vaccination and monoclonal antibody technology.

This unit follows the natural sequence of immune response: we start with the first lines of defence that prevent pathogens ever entering the body, then move to non-specific internal innate immunity, before covering the targeted, specific adaptive immune system carried out by B and T lymphocytes.
