## Unit at a glance

You will begin by exploring the core principles of circulatory systems, including the key difference between single circulation (found in fish) and double circulation (found in mammals). ## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Confusing which side of the heart carries oxygenated vs deoxygenated blood when looking at diagrams.
  - Why it fails: Heart diagrams are drawn from the perspective of the organism, so left and right are reversed relative to the viewer.
  - Correct: Remember the left side of the heart (on the right of most diagrams) pumps oxygenated blood to the body, while the right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
- **Wrong:** Defining arteries as vessels that carry oxygenated blood and veins as vessels that carry deoxygenated blood.
  - Why it fails: This rule does not apply to the pulmonary artery (carries deoxygenated blood to lungs) and pulmonary vein (carries oxygenated blood to the heart).
  - Correct: Define arteries as vessels that carry blood away from the heart, and veins as vessels that carry blood towards the heart, regardless of oxygen content.
- **Wrong:** Mixing up the functions of white blood cells and platelets.
  - Why it fails: Both cell types are involved in responding to injury, leading to confusion between their specific roles.
  - Correct: White blood cells fight infection by targeting pathogens, while platelets are responsible for blood clotting to stop bleeding.
