This unit explores the components of a balanced human diet, the structure and function of the digestive system, and the processes of digestion, absorption, and assimilation of nutrients to support body function.

**Prerequisites:** [Biological Molecules (Unit 4)](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-0610-u4-overview/)

## Learning objectives

- Identify the 7 core components of a balanced human diet and explain the function of each
- Describe the gross structure of the human digestive system and the role of each organ
- Distinguish between physical and chemical digestion, and give examples of each process
- Explain how the small intestine is adapted for efficient nutrient absorption and assimilation

## Unit at a glance

You will first build foundational knowledge of dietary requirements and the gross structure of the digestive tract, covering mechanical processes that break down food before chemical processing. You will then move to the molecular and cellular processes that break down complex nutrients into absorbable molecules, and how these are taken up and used by the body.

The unit is split into two interconnected subtopics:
- [Diet, the Digestive System and Physical Digestion](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-0610-u5-diet-the-digestive-system-and/) — Covers balanced diet components, digestive system anatomy, and mechanical breakdown of food via chewing, peristalsis, and bile emulsification.
- [Chemical Digestion and Absorption](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/cie-0610-u5-chemical-digestion-and-absorption/) — Explains enzyme action in chemical digestion, absorption adaptations of the small intestine, and nutrient assimilation pathways.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Classifying bile emulsification of fats as chemical digestion
  - Why it fails: Bile only breaks fat into smaller droplets without altering its molecular structure, so it is a physical process
  - Correct: Only categorize processes that change the chemical composition of food as chemical digestion
- **Wrong:** Stating all digestion occurs in the stomach
  - Why it fails: Most carbohydrate and fat digestion takes place in the small intestine, with the stomach only initiating protein breakdown
  - Correct: Map each major nutrient class to its primary site of digestion in the alimentary canal
- **Wrong:** Confusing absorption and assimilation of nutrients
  - Why it fails: Absorption is the movement of nutrients into the bloodstream, while assimilation is the use of these nutrients by body cells
  - Correct: Explicitly distinguish the two processes when describing post-digestion nutrient pathways

## Cheatsheet

| Key Concept | Brief Definition | Related Subtopic |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Balanced Diet | Contains correct proportions of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre, water | Diet, the Digestive System and Physical Digestion |
| Peristalsis | Wave-like muscle contractions that move food along the alimentary canal | Diet, the Digestive System and Physical Digestion |
| Amylase | Enzyme that breaks starch into maltose, produced in salivary glands and pancreas | Chemical Digestion and Absorption |
| Protease | Enzyme that breaks proteins into amino acids, produced in the stomach, pancreas, and small intestine | Chemical Digestion and Absorption |
| Villi Adaptations | Large surface area, thin walls, dense blood supply for efficient nutrient absorption | Chemical Digestion and Absorption |

## What's next

Begin your study of human nutrition with the first subtopic covering dietary requirements, digestive system anatomy, and physical digestion processes. This foundational content will prepare you for the second subtopic, which explores enzyme-driven chemical digestion and nutrient absorption mechanisms. Once you complete all content in this unit, you will move on to the next unit covering human gas exchange.
