## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Confusing in situ and ex situ conservation methods
  - Why it fails: Many students mix up on-site (in situ) methods like national parks with off-site (ex situ) methods like captive breeding programs, leading to lost marks on definition and application questions.
  - Correct: Always link conservation method terms to their location: in situ = in the natural habitat, ex situ = outside the natural habitat.
- **Wrong:** Stating all genetic modification (GM) is inherently harmful or risk-free
  - Why it fails: Exam questions require balanced evaluation of GM, not one-sided arguments; marks are awarded for acknowledging both benefits (e.g. pest-resistant crops) and risks (e.g. cross-pollination with wild plants).
  - Correct: Structure GM evaluation answers to list 2-3 evidence-based benefits and 2-3 evidence-based risks for full marks.
- **Wrong:** Attributing all plastic pollution harm only to animal ingestion
  - Why it fails: Plastic pollution has wide-ranging impacts including chemical leaching into water supplies, habitat destruction and microplastic accumulation in food chains, not just animals eating plastic pieces.
  - Correct: List at least two distinct impacts of plastic pollution when asked in exam questions.
