2. Common Pitfalls
Wrong move:
Confusing pollination with fertilisation in flowering plants
Why:
Pollination is the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma, while fertilisation is the fusion of male and female gametes that occurs only after successful pollination.
Correct move:
Map the full plant reproduction sequence: pollination β pollen tube growth β fertilisation β seed/fruit formation to avoid mixing up stages.
Wrong move:
Mixing up oestrogen and progesterone roles in the menstrual cycle
Why:
Both hormones regulate the uterus lining, but oestrogen repairs the lining post-menstruation while progesterone maintains the lining after ovulation to support implantation.
Correct move:
Associate oestrogen with the first (follicular) half of the cycle, and progesterone with the second (luteal) half of the cycle.
Wrong move:
Claiming HIV can be spread by casual contact such as hugging or sharing cutlery
Why:
HIV (the STI named in the 0610 syllabus) is only passed on through the exchange of infected body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk, not by ordinary social contact.
Correct move:
Remember HIV is a virus that may lead to AIDS, and that the spread of STIs is controlled by using condoms, not sharing needles, screening/treatment and limiting the number of partners.
