## Unit at a Glance

The unit follows a logical learning arc that progresses from discrete physiological systems to how these systems integrate to support survival. You will first explore how the body removes toxic metabolic waste, then examine mechanisms for detecting and responding to internal and external stimuli, before connecting these systems to the regulation of stable internal conditions.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Confusing excretion with egestion (removal of undigested food)
  - Why it fails: Excretion removes metabolic waste products made by body cells, while egestion removes undigested material that never entered cells.
  - Correct: Only classify waste produced by cellular reactions (urea, carbon dioxide, excess water) as excretory products.
- **Wrong:** Mixing up the order of reflex arc components, especially receptors and effectors
  - Why it fails: Receptors detect stimuli first, while effectors produce the final response, so reversed order makes the arc functionally impossible.
  - Correct: Always map the arc in sequence: stimulus → receptor → sensory neurone → relay neurone → motor neurone → effector → response.
- **Wrong:** Assuming all homeostatic responses use only hormonal control
  - Why it fails: Many homeostatic processes (e.g., thermoregulation) use a combination of nervous and hormonal signals for fast and sustained responses.
  - Correct: Check for both nervous and hormonal components when analyzing any homeostatic mechanism.
