This unit covers core concepts of electric circuits, from basic definitions to complex multi-loop systems and capacitor behavior. Mastery of these topics is required for ~1/6 of your total AP exam score.

**Prerequisites:** [Unit 1: Electrostatics](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/ap-physics-c-em-u1-overview/); [Unit 2: Conductors, Capacitors, Dielectrics](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/ap-physics-c-em-u2-overview/)

## Learning objectives

- Model current, resistance, and capacitance behavior in DC circuits using fundamental physical laws
- Apply Kirchhoff's rules to solve for unknown currents and voltages in multi-loop circuits
- Analyze steady-state and transient behavior of capacitors in RC circuits
- Calculate equivalent resistance and capacitance for series and parallel component combinations

## Unit at a Glance

This unit builds from foundational definitions of current and resistance up to complex circuit analysis. We start with core properties of circuit components, then introduce the universal rules that govern all circuit behavior, then apply these rules to steady-state DC circuits, and finally extend the analysis to capacitors in transient and steady-state circuits. All sub-topics build on each other: mastering early concepts is critical for solving complex multi-loop problems later.

This unit includes the following connected sub-topics:
- [AP Physics C: E&M Capacitors in Circuits](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/ap-physics-c-em-u3-capacitors-in-circuits/) — Analyzes transient charging/discharging and steady-state behavior of capacitors in DC circuits.
- [AP Physics C: E&M Current and Resistance](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/ap-physics-c-em-u3-current-and-resistance/) — Defines current, resistance, and resistivity, and derives power relationships for electric circuits.
- [AP Physics C: E&M Kirchhoff's Rules](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/ap-physics-c-em-u3-kirchhoff-s-rules/) — Introduces junction and loop rules for analyzing non-simple multi-loop DC circuits.
- [AP Physics C: E&M Steady-State Direct Current Circuits](https://www.owlsprep.com/study/ap-physics-c-em-u3-steady-state-direct-current-circuits/) — Covers series/parallel resistor combinations and solves for unknown circuit values.

## Common pitfalls

- **Wrong:** Mixing up series vs parallel rules for resistors and capacitors
  - Why it fails: Equivalent resistance and equivalent capacitance use opposite combination rules for series and parallel arrangements, a common source of MCQ errors
  - Correct: Remember: $R_{eq}$ adds in series, $C_{eq}$ adds in parallel
- **Wrong:** Treating capacitor voltage as constant during charging/discharging
  - Why it fails: This ignores the exponential transient behavior that is frequently tested on both MCQs and FRQs
  - Correct: Use time-dependent exponential equations for charging/discharging $V_c(t)$
- **Wrong:** Forgetting a fully charged capacitor acts as an open circuit in steady state
  - Why it fails: This leads to incorrect current and voltage calculations for steady-state circuits with capacitors
  - Correct: Set current through a fully charged capacitor to zero for steady-state analysis

## Cheatsheet

| Concept | Key Formula/Rule |
| --- | --- |
| Ohm's Law | $V = IR$ |
| Power in a circuit | $P = IV = I^2 R = V^2/R$ |
| Resistance from resistivity | $R = \rho L/A$ |
| Kirchhoff's Junction Rule | $\sum I_{in} = \sum I_{out}$ |
| Kirchhoff's Loop Rule | $\sum \Delta V = 0$ around any closed loop |
| Equivalent resistance (series) | $R_{eq} = R_1 + R_2 + ...$ |
| Equivalent resistance (parallel) | $1/R_{eq} = 1/R_1 + 1/R_2 + ...$ |
| RC time constant | $\tau = RC$ |
| Capacitor charging voltage | $V_c(t) = \varepsilon (1 - e^{-t/RC})$ |

## What's next

Begin this unit with the foundational sub-topic Current and Resistance to build core knowledge of circuit components and relationships. Once you complete all sub-topics in this unit, you will move on to the next unit covering magnetic fields, where you will apply your understanding of electric current to analyze magnetic forces and fields.
